FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Wendake, June 18, 2009 – The Assembly of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador (AFNQL) won’t be fooled by Bill 57, tabled by Minister Claude Béchard, concerning the
“occupation of forest land”.“We already have a Minister of Occupation of Territory, and now a Minister Responsible for the Occupation of Forest Land. Faced with a government which systematically pours scorn on the rights of the First Nations, the AFNQL considers that the government of Quebec is giving rise to provocation”, stated Chief of the AFNQL, Ghislain Picard.

AFNQL rejects this approach of contempt and confrontation, which can only prejudice the harmonious development of Quebec. “Sooner or later, the Grand Bâtisseur will have to face up to its responsibilities as leader of government, take into account ancestral rights and treaty rights of First Nations, and convey the message to its Cabinet Ministers”, insisted Chief Picard.

The Assembly of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador is the regional organization regrouping the Chiefs of the First Nations in Quebec and Labrador.
