WINNIPEG – Canadian actor Adam Beach says he is walking a fine line in accepting to be an ambassador for the federal government’s Canada 150 celebrations.
Beach says he feels he should pay tribute and acknowledge a country that has given him so many opportunities and has helped fund his movies.
But he also feels that in celebrations of Canada, the mistreatment of aboriginal people is often downplayed or ignored outright.
That is something he would like to help change as one of 150 ambassadors for the anniversary of Confederation.
Beach grew up on the Dog Creek reserve in Manitoba and has gone on to star in Hollywood blockbusters such as “Flags of Our Fathers” and “Windtalkers”.
He also has a film school in Winnipeg, aimed at getting more indigenous people into the industry.
Eventually, he’d like to see indigenous artists be able to work outside the Hollywood or Canadian government systems, and put forward their own perspective in everything from documentaries to comedies.
