MILLET, Alta. – Two First Nation communities are grieving the loss of five people in a highway crash south of Edmonton.

Chief Vern Saddleback with the Samson Cree Nation says two communities _ Samson and Ermineskin _ lost members in the collision.

Three sisters — 22-year-old Cheyane (SHY-ann) Soosay, 19-year-old Dominique Northwest and 23-year-old Latesha (la-TISH-ah) Northwest — were among those killed.

They were travelling with 30-year-old Anthony Swampy and 22-year-old Terrelle Minde when their car and an S-U-V collided near Millet, about 30 kilometres south of Maskwacis (MASS’-kwah-cheez), on Tuesday afternoon.

The R-C-M-P said four of the victims died at the scene while the fifth later died in hospital.

The other driver suffered minor injuries.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
