BURNABY, B.C. – Pipeline protesters defying a court order to dismantle their camp outside a Kinder Morgan terminal in B-C say they will tie themselves to its structures if Mounties try to intervene.
Spokeswoman Kwitsel Tatel says some protesters have offered to protect a sacred fire that has been burning around the clock at the settlement known as Camp Cloud.
A B-C Supreme Court judge granted the City of Burnaby an injunction on Friday ordering protesters to remove all structures, shelters and vehicles and extinguish the fire within 48 hours.
That deadline has now passed, but Tatel says the campers are exercising their Aboriginal rights to remain on the land and are making a stand to protect the water from an oil spill.
Acting city manager Dipak Dattani says Burnaby was hoping campers would take down the site peacefully, but since that hasn’t been the case, the city is now speaking with R-C-M-P about enforcement.
He says Mounties have discretion to decide the timing and manner in which the order will be enforced.
