OTTAWA – C-F-L Commissioner Randy Ambrosie says the Edmonton Eskimos are taking the right approach amid increasing calls for the team to change its name.
Some consider the word Eskimo a slur, with the head of Canada’s national Inuit organization (Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami) calling the term an offensive relic of the past.
The football team said this month that it uses the name with “pride and respect,” but actively listening to input on the issue.
Ambrosie — who played his final five C-F-L seasons with Edmonton — says the team is having conversations with Indigenous communities about a possible name change.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Alberta Premier Rachel Notley have both called on the team to host a public discussion on renaming the franchise out of respect for Inuit people.
