Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps says a statue of former prime minister John A. Macdonald will be removed from the front entrance of city hall, as a gesture of reconciliation with First Nations.

Macdonald was the first prime minister of Canada and Helps says he was also a “key architect” of the residential school system.

She says removing the statue will mean Indigenous people do not need to walk past a painful reminder of colonial violence each time they enter city hall.

She quotes Macdonald as saying Indigenous children should be withdrawn as much as possible from the influence of their parents, and the only way to do that is to put them in centralized schools where they can learn the habits of white men.

Helps says the city does not propose erasing history, but rather taking time to tell that chapter of Canadian history in a thoughtful way.

She says the statue will be removed Saturday and stored until the city finds an appropriate way to put Macdonald into the right context.
