PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – An Indigenous leader is calling for safety assurances after the explosion of a natural gas pipeline in northern British Columbia displaced about 100 members of a local First Nation.

Terry Teegee says he’s shaken after witnessing the Enbridge pipeline explode less than two kilometres from his home on Lhedli T’enneh (Klate-lee Ten-eh) First Nation land near Prince George, B-C, and it left a deep impression about the vulnerability of anyone living near a pipeline.

The Assembly of First Nations regional chief says the Tuesday blast sounded like a huge rumbling train or low-flying jet passing over his roof and he had to pick dirt out of his hair after it rained down on him.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident, which shut down the Enbridge natural gas pipeline.

Fortis B-C says up to 700-thousand natural gas customers in northern B-C, the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island could be directly affected by a potential natural gas shortage as a result of the blast.
