SASKATOON – The family of an Indigenous man who was fatally shot on a Saskatchewan farm is suing the R-C-M-P and the farmer who was acquitted in the killing.
Colten Boushie was shot in the head in August 2016 near the community of Biggar.
Gerald Stanley was found not guilty of second-degree murder in his death.
Stanley had testified that his gun went off accidentally when he was trying to scare away people he thought were stealing from him.
The lawsuit argues that Stanley caused Boushie’s death through negligence and recklessness.
The claim also says Mounties mistreated and discriminated against Boushie’s family after he was shot, including an unlawful search.
None of the allegations have been proven in court and Stanley’s lawyer could not be reached for comment.
Boushie’s mother is seeking financial damages, including money for funeral costs and loss of income.
