OTTAWA – Members of Parliament return to Ottawa after a two-week break today, with the prime minister away in Europe and the Liberal government still struggling to break an impasse over the Trans Mountain pipeline.
The sitting resumes a day after Justin Trudeau instructed his finance minister to enter negotiations with Kinder Morgan to — quote — “remove the uncertainty” hanging over the project.
Trudeau announced the move after a meeting with the premiers of Alberta and B-C yesterday failed to produce a compromise between the two provinces.
Trudeau says legislation is also likely this week that would re-assert federal jurisdiction over energy projects that cross provincial boundaries.
The prime minister is in France, where tomorrow he’ll become the first Canadian prime minister to address the French National Assembly, before he heads to a Commonwealth summit in London.
His visit to Paris comes only days after France joined Britain and the U-S in launching airstrikes against the Syrian government for an alleged chemical-weapon attack this month. (The Canadian Press)
