BU and MB Treaty Relations Commission sign MOU in Support of Education on Treaty-related Issues

BRANDON, MB – Brandon University President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Louis P. Visentin and Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba (TRCM) Treaty Commissioner Mr. Dennis White Bird met on December 10 in Brandon University’s Louis Riel Room to sign a memorandum of agreement that will see the two organizations cooperating in efforts to support the Commission’s mandate to improve the understanding of the Treaty Relationship and treaty-related issues for students and Manitobans in general through course, curriculum and faculty development and the pursuance of other opportunities that will allow the expertise of both organizations to benefit students.The memorandum sets out several general forms of cooperation that will be pursued, including:
• The creation of an Ecclectica (BU’s e-magazine dedicated to discoveries and trends in the humanities and Sciences) on Treaty Issues;
• Scheduled speakers seminars on the BU campus on Treaty Issues;
• Consideration of integrating TRCM research into appropriate courses syllabuses (particularly courses in Education and Justice);
• Identification of sessional instructors to teach a course on Treaty Relations at BU;
• Work towards identifying a Treaty specialist as a BU Stanley Knowles Distinguished Visiting Professor;
• Promotion of Treaty Issues on campus through various events and/or large gatherings.
“Brandon University has been involved in partnerships with the Aboriginal people for much of its history,” says BU President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Louis P. Visentin. “This present relationship is another example of our commitment to encourage cultural diversity and understanding between us all. I think it will be a benefit to everyone in the Brandon community.”
Treaty Commissioner Dennis White Bird says the Memorandum of Understanding is an important step in enhancing the Treaty relationship.
“Brandon University and its staff have an important role to play in educating Canadians on the role of the land and history in creating this wonderful country,” says Mr. White Bird. “By signing this MOU, the TRCM will be able to deliver its messages to Brandon University students, staff and management. We hope to share the message ‘We Are All Treaty People’ and the TRCM is eager to work with Brandon University to enhance the Treaty relationship.”
The Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba (TRCM) is a neutral body, created through a partnership between the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) and Canada, with a mandate to strengthen, rebuild and enhance the Treaty relationship and mutual respect between First Nations in the province of Manitoba and other Canadians.
