BU Visual and Aboriginal Arts Department presents Human Nature, a ceramics thesis exhibition by Derryl May, at the Sutherland Gallery
Mon, Dec 10, 2007
BRANDON, MB – From December 14 to 22, 2007 and January 9 to 12, 2008, the Brandon University Visual and Aboriginal Arts Department proudly presents Human Nature, a thesis exhibition featuring the ceramics work of Derryl May, at the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art. An evening reception with refreshments will be held on Friday, December 14, 2007 at 6:00 p.m.In his thesis exhibition Human Nature, Derryl May uses ceramic sculpture, utilizing the organic and expressive qualities of clay, to confront issues of environmental degradation caused by human interaction. Issues of soil erosion, water pollution and deforestation are conveyed within these sculptural works through direct representation as well as symbolically within the human figure. The purpose for this merger between human figure and the natural environment is to show how closely related we really are. This parallel also portrays the environment with a voice and an emotion, which the viewer may relate to. It is through this comparison of Human and Nature that people can realize the importance of preserving the environment and of its existence.
The exhibition runs from December 14 to 22 (closed on Sunday, December 16), and from January 9 to 12, 2008. Gallery hours are daily from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., admission is free and all are welcome!
