Calling All Métis Citizens In The Georgian Bay Area!
September 4, 2009 — If you are a Métis citizen living in and around the Georgian Bay area and you have knowledge of the land and how it was (and is) traditionally used for plant harvesting, berry/fruit harvesting and hunting/fishing, the MNO’s Lands, Resources and Consultation branch wants to hear from you. We also want to hear from anyone who may have knowledge or experience with the general harvesting practices of Métis in the area now and in the past. The MNO’s Lands, Resources and Consultations Branch is working with the Georgian Bay and Owen Sound Métis Councils to gather information that will be used to create a record of “Traditional Ecological Knowledge” (TEK) which will serve as a resource to assess potential impacts and/or benefits of the proposed Bruce to Milton Hydro Transmission Corridor, as well as other projects that may be proposed in the future.
If you or anyone you know has any information on Métis customs, traditions and sacred sites in the area, or is aware of information that is culturally significant to the Métis, we want to hear from you. Individuals will be interviewed privately by MNO staff members and an outside consultant working for an information gathering firm. An honorarium will be paid to those participating. The interviews will take place in Midland beginning Tuesday, September 8 and running until September 11 and in Owen Sound from September 21 to 25, 2009
