Cambrian College Enrolment Continues to Grow

SUDBURY – The upward trend in enrolment continues at Cambrian College. Enrolment numbers for this semester have surpassed last September’s numbers, which were the highest in 10 years.

Approximately 4831 full- and part-time students are registered for classes this Fall semester, an increase of just under six per cent compared to September of 2017. This September’s enrolment includes 1051 international students from 29 countries, and 775 Indigenous students.

“It’s no surprise that we are growing this way,” says Bill Best, President of Cambrian College. “Cambrian is a leader in education in the region and across the province.

I credit our outstanding faculty, the diversity of the programs we offer, and the experience our students get living in Sudbury, where we enjoy big-city amenities with the affordability and friendliness of a smaller community.”

Jesse Hayward of the southern Ontario community of Acton is one of the students starting her education at Cambrian. Hayward is enrolled in Cambrian’s Paramedic program. She is also a member of the Golden Shield women’s soccer team.

“I’ve known since Grade 10 that I’ve wanted to attend Cambrian in Sudbury. A team of recruiters came to my high school and I knew the Paramedic program was for me. I had a chance to visit the campus, and I love the size and layout, and the friendliness of the people at Cambrian.”

Another of Cambrian’s new students is France Paquette. France is a first-year student from Sturgeon Falls in the Animation program.

“I chose Animation because I love to draw and bring cartoons to life, and a relative of mine is a professional animator. I chose Cambrian because I’ve heard a lot of great things about the college and the program, and I didn’t want to go to Toronto.”

Monica Prieto Rivera is also joining Cambrian College for the first time this September. Monica is an international student from Honduras, and is enrolled in the Human Resources Management program. Monica is also one of the first international students to be a member of Cambrian’s women’s volleyball team.

“I wanted to continue my studies after earning a Bachelor degree in Honduras. I received a lot of feedback from people who attended Cambrian and I realized it would be my best option. I love being in a smaller community. I’m really excited to start my new adventure in this country full of opportunities, play volleyball for Cambrian, and to see snow for the first time!”

Expanding its influence globally and promoting areas of distinction – such as unique programs and student services and applied research projects – are key priorities in Cambrian’s strategic plan.

“At one time, it would have been unthinkable to have students from every province and more than two dozen countries, but now we do,” adds Bill Best. “We’re always adding new programs, plus we have programs you can only find in a few other colleges, such as Powerline Technician, Crime Analytics, Music – Performance, Social Services Worker – Indigenous Specialization, and Ultrasound, to name a few.”

Cambrian has also moved to a system of year-round education, to meet the growing demand by domestic and international students for greater choice and flexibility in the academic year. Cambrian is offering intakes for more than 20 programs for January of 2019, with another new semester starting next May.

“The traditional college year of September to April doesn’t necessarily work for everyone, so we want to ensure students can start their college experience when it makes the most sense for them,” adds Dr. Paula Gouveia, Cambrian’s new Vice President, Academic.
