– Discussing the 150th birthday of Canada
– A moment to thank God for the blessings of peace and security found here
– However two things to keep in mind
– Canada has not always been the same. Recent generations have seen changes in attitude, even at a federal level against minorities
– Chinese head tax, internment of Japanese Canadians
– Positive changes today should be maintained, and that requires vigilance, and playing our role in the socio-political arena
– Should never forget the First Nations of Canada
– British, French, Irish, Italian, are all immigrants or descendants of immigrants.
– While new and not so new immigrants enjoy many rights and privileges as Canadian citizens, they shouldn’t forget the suffering of the First Nations
– The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and their report in 2015 outlining various details
– Learn our country’s history and work towards it betterment.
– If Canada could establish residential schools forcibly before, why could they not fund traditional schools for First Nations communities now?
– Treatment of minorities within Muslim countries
– The story of Imam Ali, and his treatment of the poor minority during his caliphate
– The stark contrast to the present state of the Muslim world, and the way they treat minorities, other nations, and foreign workers – no rights and no security
– Gulf states and their abuse of foreign workers
– Pakistan and its government, mistreatment and no security for minorities
– Recent twin blasts in Parachinar and Quetta, almost 100 Shias were killed, yet the Pakistani government did not make any statement or action
“We need to be thankful for everything we have here. But we also have a responsibility of vigilance; to make sure we play our socio-political role as equal citizens of this beautiful country. From the level of school boards, to municipal, provincial, & federal levels.”
“We’re thankful for the blessings of freedom, peace, & security in this land. However, while we celebrate 150 years, two things are worthy of consideration. Canada has not always been the same brightness, even during contemporary history. Changing attitudes even at a federal level, against minorities. Head tax on the Chinese, internment of Japanese Canadians, etc. Secondly, we shouldn’t forget the First Nations of Canada. We’re all immigrants, or descendents of immigrants. They are the original citizens of this land. Keep that in mind always.”
