Canada congratulates Sioux Valley Dakota Nation on its latest addition to reserve. New reserve land will support economic growth for the community.

The Government of Canada is proud to work in collaboration with partners to support economic development opportunities and growth in First Nation communities.

During a recent visit to the community the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, congratulated Sioux Valley Dakota Nation on its latest addition to reserve.

The First Nation has added 79 acres of land to its reserve in the Rural Municipality of Sifton, Manitoba, located approximately 40 kilometers from the City of Brandon. The land is currently home to a gas bar and convenience store, with future plans for continued growth and development which include a restaurant, hotel, commercial space, and an outdoor stage.

Quick facts

• The 79 acres of land was added to reserve on August 31, 2018, however the transfer was completed when the lands were added to Sioux Valley Dakota Nation’s Governance Agreement, and when the amended agreement was signed by the Minister and Chief and Council on September 22, 2018.
• Indigenous Services Canada provided approximately $422,000 in support for architectural drawings and engineering plans, and $1 million of the total cost of $2,950,700 for construction of the gas bar and convenience store.
• This addition to reserve is unique in that Sioux Valley Dakota Nation is the only self-governing First Nation in Manitoba and this is the first time the Nation has added reserve land in Manitoba as a self-governing band.
