Canada’s Government Helps Bring Québec City’s 400th Anniversary Celebrations to Northwest Territories
YELLOWKNIFE, November 29, 2008 – Residents of Hay River, Inuvik, Fort Smith, and Yellowknife, as well as visitors to the Northwest Territories, are able to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Québec City, thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada.
The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced support for the Joie de vivre program of the Fédération franco-ténoise, which celebrates the history of the French-Canadian presence in the Northwest Territories since 1665.With support from Canada’s Government, the Fédération franco-ténoise, in partnership with the Association franco-culturelle de Yellowknife, organized a number of projects, including a multidisciplinary performance in the Northwest Territories’ four Francophone communities to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Québec City. The show highlights traditional and neo-traditional French-Canadian music, traditional dances, anecdotes, stories, and period costumes, which were used to pay tribute to the role played by Québec City in the establishment of Francophone communities in the Northwest Territories. The show will be presented for the last time on November 30, 2008, in Yellowknife.
“Our Government was pleased to join the Fédération franco-ténoise in celebrating the 400th anniversary of the founding of Québec City and pay homage to the role that this event played in the building of our country,” said Minister Moore. “Our vibrant and diverse French-language communities continue to flourish, thanks to the direction set by this important Canadian city and its people.”
“The funding we received helped us plan activities to promote the French language and culture,” said Léo-Paul Provencher, Executive Director of the Fédération franco-ténoise. “This contribution has certainly helped bring communities together and solidify our community network.”
The federal Government provided support through the Community Life component of Canadian Heritage’s Development of Official Language Communities Program This program is designed to foster the vitality of Canada’s English- and French-speaking minority communities and enable them to participate fully in all aspects of Canadian life.
The Government of Canada is committed to enhancing the vitality of French-language minority communities and recognizing the importance of linguistic duality as an economic, social, and cultural asset to all Canadians. The Roadmap for Canada’s Linguistic Duality 2008-2013 identifies culture as a priority area for action.
