Canada’s New Government Supports Mistissini Cree Community in Its Economic Diversification Efforts

Chibougamau, Quebec, April 5, 2007 – The Minister of Labour and Minister of Canada Economic Development, the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, today announced a $34,500 non-repayable contribution to the Band Council of the Cree Nation of Mistissini for preparation of an ecotourism development plan.

This community, located alongside Mistassini Lake and a wildlife reserve, is counting on the assets and features of its site to develop this type of tourism. Planning will help identify all ecotourism opportunities, in particular products and services that could be offered.

“Canada Economic Development sees tourism as an important lever for communities’ growth,” stated Minister Blackburn. “I am pleased to be able to encourage the Band Council’s desire to generate entrepreneurial initiatives and, ultimately, employment. Our support ties in with Canada’s new government’s wish to foster the emergence of initiatives focussing on the specific needs of each of Quebec’s regions.”
