Canadian Civil Liberties Association put enforcement of pandemic orders under spotlight – The Sudbury Star

With bylaw officers and police across Canada dishing out tickets and charges to people accused of breaking emergency orders during the COVID-19 pandemic, a national human-rights organization wants to hear from anyone caught in the crackdown.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) has launched a portal for individuals who have been ticketed or charged to report their experiences. The information collected will be used to bring forward recommendations to amend emergency legislation, CCLA executive director Michael Bryant said.

The submissions, which won’t include personal information, will also be used to scrutinize the expanded power given to bylaw officers, possibly leading to a challenge of the constitutional authority of the municipal employees, said Bryant, Ontario’s former attorney general.
