About 120 students from Mi’kmaq schools in Cape Breton have new bragging rights.
The children were part of a recording project that won the Aboriginal Recording of the Year Award at last weekend’s Nova Scotia Music Awards.
The project co-ordinator, Angelo Spinazzola, said the kids likely haven’t yet fully absorbed the news.
“They don’t even realize how big this is. This is a nice award.”
The album, The First Nations Songwriting Sessions, features songs written and performed by students from grades 2 to 6.
Spinazzola works with the kids to develop a theme for each song, write the lyrics and arrange the music.
The project gives the students hope and strength, he said.
