The Coalition for Algoma Passenger Trains is launching another lobby effort designed to urge the federal government that passenger rail service is necessary to move people in Northern Ontario.
The group points to forced closure of major highways as a result of forest fires in Northern Ontario last summer. It notes that highways are the only means of accessing communities in remote areas of the province and a passenger train provides alternative and safe service.
In addition, climate change has created flooding, non-navigable logging roads, severe winter storms, landslides and rock slides making road transportation difficult to impossible.
