Capt. Marryat’s 1838 visit to America coincided, as previously discussed, with a money supply issue and the Lower Canadian Rebellion of 1838. It also coincided with part of the extensive American plan to remove Indians from east of the Mississippi and to transfer their land rights to places in the west, including Oklahoma which was then designated Indian Territory. This has been known in American history as the Trail of Tears. The Americans did not succeed in moving all Indian Territory from the east, and while Marryat was in America the Seminoles in Florida were resisting removal in what is known as the Seminole war.
