CF Operation Demonstrates Value of Interagency Cooperation in Canada’s Arctic

YELLOWKNIFE – Operation NARWHAL 07, a sovereignty operation, took place in the Northwest Territories from April 16-27, 2007. During the operation, troops and aircraft assisted the RCMP in response to a simulated threat to the oil production and transportation infrastructure in the Northwest Territories. The Canadian Forces also practiced the activation of the military’s Major Air Disaster (MAJAID) plan.
“Operation NARWHAL 07 successfully demonstrates our ability to operate in a complex setting in a joint and integrated manner,” said Brigadier-General Chris Whitecross, Commander of Joint Task Force (North). “This operation reinforced the value of interagency cooperation and civilian partnerships in planning for and responding to domestic events.”The operation was conducted in and around Norman Wells, Fort Simpson, Inuvik, Aklavik and Yellowknife. Approximately 500 soldiers, air force personnel, support personnel and exercise control staff took part.
Operation NARWHAL 07 is a Canada Command operation designed to exercise Joint Task Force (North) in the conduct of domestic operations in support of other government departments in its area of responsibility, Canada’s Arctic.
