The chief of the We’koqma’q First Nation in Inverness Co. says band members will hopefully have a new community centre before the New Year.

Their previous community centre, which was built in 1967, was lost in a fire in Dec. 2015.

Rod Googoo, the band’s chief, says progress has been slow because workers have been spread out at a variety of jobs in the community.

Googoo tells The Hawk the plan is for the centre to be finished by late 2017.

“We’re just waiting to finish up on some of the projects we started,” he says. “Hopefully we’ll get back to work on the community hall and have it hopefully up and finished before Christmas- that’s the goal anyway.”
