Next week, a Saskatoon city council committee is expected to consider requests to rename the Traffic Bridge and Victoria Park to acknowledge reconciliation with Aboriginal peoples.
Shirley Isbister, president of the Central Urban Metis Federation, wrote a letter asking that Victoria Park, or a portion of it, be renamed Reconciliation Park. One of the recommendations from Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission is to honour Aboriginal heritage through the naming of prominent infrastructure and amenities.
Ruth Elliott, a teacher-librarian with Saskatoon Public Schools, also wrote asking the city to consider renaming the Traffic Bridge the Truth and Reconciliation Bridge or TRC Bridge. Elliott wrote on behalf of a class of Grade 7 students at Lawson Heights School.
