The British Columbia government’s website states that B.C. is No. 1 in job creation in the country, having created over 50,000 new jobs since the Canada Starts Here: BC Jobs Plan was announced. What are missing from the website are details. Where are the jobs, who occupies them and who benefits?
One sector of the economy that this province can be proud of as a world class leader and one that is creating jobs now is B.C.’s clean energy sector. As a result of the 2008 Clean Power Call managed by BC Hydro, 25 clean energy projects located throughout B.C. are in various stages of planning and development.
Twelve unique small hydro and wind developments that are in construction now are good examples of what this sector contributes to B.C.’s economy. AltaGas, Brookfield Renewable Energy, Innergex, Regional Power and Veresen are constructing hydro projects near the Lower Mainland, on Vancouver Island and in the Northwest. GDF Suez and Capital Power are building wind projects in the Northeast and on Northern Vancouver Island.
