Coates helps guide Algoma’s future – Sault Star

An academic with a background in Indigenous issues recently met with Algoma University brass to help chart the post-secondary institution’s future.

Ken Coates, Canada Research Chair at Johnson-Shoyama School of Public Policy at University of Saskatchewan, met with Algoma’s senate, faculty and administration last Friday.

He focused on the university’s programming.

Algoma needs to consider “what makes us standout and be unique to students,” said president Asima Vezina.

“He’s really pushed us to think about looking at our programs as a whole and what makes us standout and be unique to students,” she said. “He’s really pushed us to think about looking at our programs as a whole, perhaps reducing the number of individualized programming and looking at maybe consolidation, but around new and emerging themes that will be really attractive to students moving forward.”
