Community Development Fund Tier 1 supports arts, recreation and communication

Whitehorse—Twenty community projects are receiving support totalling almost $260,000 from the Community Development Fund (CDF) as a result of recent Tier 1 applications. 

“The Community Development Fund is designed for projects of all sizes that accomplish a wide variety of goals,” Economic Development Minister Currie Dixon said. “These are projects and events that provide long-term benefits and add value to Yukon communities.” 

One recipient is the Yukon Aboriginal Women’s Council (YAWC) which is receiving $19,060 to support participation in the second Yukon Aboriginal Women’s Summit (YAWS2). 

“The Yukon Women’s Aboriginal Council is pleased to support Aboriginal women from across Yukon in attending the second Yukon Aboriginal Women’s Summit,” YAWC president Chantal Genier said. “We feel that representation from all Yukon communities is vital to the success of the summit. The financial assistance provided by the Community Development Fund will ensure that YAWC is able to provide the necessary support to Aboriginal women from the communities who wish to come to Whitehorse to participate in the summit.” 

Another recipient is the Yukon Amateur Radio Association (YARA) which is awarded $6,043 to partner with Parks Canada to improve radio coverage for recreational and emergency communications purposes. 

“For 20 years, the Yukon Amateur Radio Association has provided course-wide communications for the Kluane-Chilkat Bike Relay along the 240 kilometre highway from Haines Junction to Haines, Alaska,” YARA technical director Jeff Stanhope said. “Support from the CDF will help fund the installation of a new radio repeater site near Klukshu, an area where no communications existed before, which will greatly enhance rider safety. This new repeater will also allow our association to provide better communications in the area for other agencies such as the Emergency Measures Organization.” 

The Community Development Fund offers three levels of financial support for Yukon organizations and municipal and First Nations governments. Tier 1 funding is for requests up to $20,000. Tier 2 funding is for requests between $20,001 and $75,000 and Tier 3 funding is for requests over $75,000. The next intake deadline is October 15 for Tier 1 applications. 

Applicants are encouraged to contact a community development adviser well in advance of deadlines for help with developing project ideas and submitting applications.

Carcross Rod & Gun Club – $6,584 Enhancement Project
To hire a contractor to make safety enhancements and improvements on the range. The range is a recreational and training site. Volunteer labour and donated materials will be used for some of the improvements.

To hire a professional consultant to develop a community support plan for the design, construction, development and maintenance of a soccer field in Carmacks.

To construct a new gazebo with fire pit and shelter. The project will create 120 hours of employment for one person.

Yukon Aboriginal Women’s Council – $19,060 Yukon Aboriginal Women’s Summit 2
To support participation in the summit and provide an opportunity to gain feedback from Aboriginal women on the recommendations and implementation of projects identified and developed in the first Yukon Aboriginal Women’s Summit held in 2007. The project will create 225 hours of employment for one person.

Yukon Academy of Martial Arts – $19,500 Peaceful-Warrior Program for Schools
Anti-Bullying School Pilot Project: avoiding and managing conflicts through non-aggressive, non-violent martial art, and a verbal approach to conflict resolution. The project will create 285 hours of employment for three people.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Society of Yukon (FASSY) – $13,807 Sustainability
Update and redesign “Trying Differently: A Guide for Daily Living and Working with FASDs and Other Brain Differences” and to create a banner for public speaking, teaching, trade show and conference activities. This project is part of a multi-part strategy intended to ensure and increase FASSY’s long-term relevance and sustainability. The project will create 163 hours of employment for four people.

Hillcrest Community Association – $19,929 Non-motorized Commuter Trail Route Development (Phase1)
Design phase one of a non-motorized, commuter route that would enable residents in neighborhoods west of the airport, hotel guests and visitors to Beringia Centre and the Transportation Museum to travel safely to and from downtown by remaining off the Alaska Highway. The project will create 104 hours of employment for four people.

Applying fresh preservation stain to wooden fence surrounding Tagish Cemetery to prevent deterioration.

Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation – $12,882 Moosehide Gathering Accommodation and Storage Construction of a shelter to provide accommodation for elders and performers during the Moosehide Gathering and other events at the site, and to increase storage at the site.
