It’s a new dawn for the Composite High school, after a beleaguering year punctuated with a mental health epidemic and teen fatalities.
The Grande Prairie Public School district and the Comp unveiled the school’s Student Health & Wellness Centre on Tuesday night to the public, ushering in a whole host of specialized counselling for its students.
From academic and career counselling, to a social worker, to Alberta Health Services workers, the suite is aimed to give students a one-stop-shop for direct and confidential counselling.
Comp vice principal Dave Johnson spoke to the crowd before the ribbon cutting, offering up the story which lead him to spearhead the project in just six months.
“I thought we owed something to every student who would need a compassionate caring person to share their grief and their stress, I just didn’t know how we were going to go about doing it,” he said.
