COVID-19 Pandemic Urgent Response Fund Support for the Indigenous Community in Toronto

Your donation will be doubled!

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Anishnawbe Health Toronto (AHT) continues working to ensure that First Nations, Métis and Inuit people have access to the care and traditional healing services they need.  While social distancing measures have required AHT to postpone group meetings, ceremonies and sharing circles, our team, including Traditional Healers and medical staff, are working diligently to provide support via telephone and in-person appointments for urgent needs.

As the COVID-19 outbreak continues, the Indigenous community is one of the most vulnerable communities in the city of Toronto.  High rates of poverty and homelessness are barriers to health in the best of times for this community.  Today, a lack of access to nutritious food, compromised immune systems, and chronic health conditions put the community at greater risk.  Low-income families will be hit hard by the loss of work and the closing of schools and childcare centres.

Social distancing and isolation also create greater risks for a community with extremely high rates of mental health challenges.  Remotely connecting with our team and others via electronic means is not an option for many because community members cannot afford home internet access and free public options that the community has turned to in the past are not currently available (e.g. libraries, coffee shops).

An Anonymous Family Foundation has set up a COVID–19 Pandemic Urgent Response Fund at Anishnawbe Health to support the needs of the Indigenous community during this emergency. This generous Anonymous Family Foundation is matching all donations to the fund, up to $25,000.  The fund will address urgent client priorities such as food security needs, emergency housing relief measures and online access to counselling and programs.

If you are able to, please consider making a gift to help Anishnawbe Health meet the health and wellness needs of the Indigenous community in Toronto.  Donations of any amount are gratefully received.  If you are unable to make a donation at this time, we ask that you consider sharing our message.
