The Crown has faced mounting criticism from Indigenous leaders for choosing not to charge SQ officers
Nov 18, 2016
A mother and father’s search for their missing daughter proved to be the catalyst for a process that will come to a conclusion, of sorts, on Friday.
This afternoon, the Crown will explain its reasons for not charging six Quebec provincial police officers following an investigation into the alleged abuse of Indigenous women in Val-d’Or, Que., 600 kilometres northwest of Montreal.
This morning, Val-d’Or Mayor Pierre Corbeil reiterated calls for an independent inquiry into the allegations and the “underlying racism and discrimination,” he said.
An investigative team from Radio-Canada travelled to the city last year, reaching out to the grief-stricken parents of Sindy Ruperthouse, a 44-year-old Algonquin woman who went missing in 2014.
