Cultural awareness comes to classroom – The Chronicle Journal

Ecole Gron Morgan Public School students got a taste of Aboriginal culture on Wednesday.

The Thunder Bay youngsters worked with Lakehead University education students to make birch bark baskets and attended an interactive puppet show aimed at raising awareness of First Nation cultural values.

School vice-principal Darren Lentz said the basket-making session was part of an overall school project, focusing on birch bark as a medium to integrate Oji-Cree technologies, indigenous knowledge, language, outdoor experiences and cultural handicrafts into the classroom.

Students used birch bark collected during a field trip to the Kingfisher Outdoor Education Centre.

“We are very fortunate to have the assistance and funding provided through Lakehead University to complete this project,” Lentz said.
