Some mixed weather over the August long weekend and unwavering efforts by firefighters have meant progress on wildland fires across the province.
Crews now have hose lines around the perimeter of one of the largest fires, Parry Sound 33. All control lines have held since Sunday. Currently, there are approximately 120 active fires in the province.
“The government recognizes the tremendous work fire crews are doing,” Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Jeff Yurek said. “We’ve had some good news in recent days, but it’s still a very busy fire season. I want to remind the public, especially people living near active fires, to stay alert and always keep safety in mind.”
Almost 1,000 firefighters from Ontario are attacking fires from the air and on the ground, aided by about 480 firefighters and support staff, as well as aircraft and other equipment, from Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, Parks Canada, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Mexico.
“I am proud that Ontario is recognized internationally as a leader in wildland fire management,” Yurek said. “Our number one priority is the safety of the public and the protection of communities and private property.”
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry continues to monitor the fire situation closely and the government is dedicating as many resources as needed to fight the fires across the province.
