Deseronto Protest – Update
DESERONTO, ON, April 22 – On April 22, 2008 at approximately 9:45 am, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Public Order Unit, in support of Napanee OPP detachment members, attended the protest/road closure site on County Road 2 and Deseronto Road. OPP officers trained in the safe, orderly removal of protesters advised those present at the road closure site to leave or be subject to arrest and criminal charges. Upon police intervention, the protestors dispersed without any physical altercation.
County Road 2 and Deseronto Road have reopened to traffic.
The protest/road closure was one of several protests carried out in the past two days and the OPP has launched criminal investigations into incidents that occurred over this period. Those responsible for criminal wrongdoing will be held accountable to the full extent provided by the law.
The OPP is continuing to monitor the situation, taking into account the safety of all stakeholders and recognizing and respecting the right to peaceful demonstration.
“The OPP will continue to uphold the right to lawful, peaceful protest; however we do not condone illegal activity and will not tolerate conduct intended to disrupt public peace and threaten public safety,” said Commissioner Julian Fantino.
“OPP officers will continue to act professionally and with restraint, but will take appropriate action to maintain public peace and order, and safeguard public and officer safety,” said Commissioner Fantino.
The investigations are continuing.
