Don´t Miss The Mine Rehabilitation Award Entry Deadline

The May 23, 2008 deadline for entries for the inaugural Tom Peters Memorial Reclamation Award is fast approaching. Entries should be submitted to the TPMMRA Award Subcommittee, Canadian Land Reclamation Association (Ont.), c/o Bryan Tisch, Natural Resources Canada, 555 Booth Street, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0G1. The entry form concerning the Tom Peters Memorial Mine Reclamation Award is attached.This award is being launched by the Ontario Mining Association in cooperation with the Canadian Land Reclamation Association and the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, with the generous support of Vale Inco. The purpose of this program is to encourage the pursuit of excellence in mine reclamation and to recognize and promote outstanding achievements in mine reclamation in Ontario to the mining industry, the environmental community and the broader public.
This award is targeted on the reclamation of mines regulated by the MNDM and the Ontario Mining Act. For eligibility purposes, under the broad focus of mine reclamation, the general categories of exploration, mine development, progressive rehabilitation and mine closure can be represented. Activities of an individual, or a group, can be recognized. The award subcommittee when judging entries will be looking for quality of research, innovation, effectiveness of the work, measurable outcomes and the promotion of mine reclamation.
Tom Peters represents the personification of excellence in mine rehabilitation practices. He was a founding member of the CLRA and he served as its president in 1981 and 1982. Through his work in the agriculture department at Vale Inco, he played a major role and provided leadership in the re-greening of the Sudbury area. Mr. Peters pioneered the use of agricultural practices in re-greening mine tailings.
A $5,000 bursary will be awarded in the winner´s name to a Masters, or PhD level, student involved in reclamation research related to a mine site in Ontario. Funding for this cash award is being donated by Vale Inco. The OMA plans on presenting this reclamation honour to its first winner in June 2008 at its conference on “Demographics, Global Markets and the Future Workforce” in Windsor.
