École Allain St-Cyr celebrates school expansion

by ahnationtalk on November 8, 201826 Views

The Minister of Education, Culture and Employment, Caroline Cochrane, and the Minister of Infrastructure,  Wally Schumann, are pleased to announce the opening of the newly expanded École Allain St-Cyr.

The opening was officially celebrated at the school on November 6. The gathering included students, families, administration and both friends and members of the larger francophone community. Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs Alfred Moses represented the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) at the ceremony. Ministers Cochrane and Schumann toured through the expanded areas on November 1, including a commercial model of a kitchen with three fully equipped workspaces and instructional areas and a stage accessible through both the gymnasium and a separate entrance outside the gym.

At a cost of nearly $13 million, the expansion project included instructional spaces for complex needs students, additional classrooms, the gymnasium and stage, which can be opened or closed off depending on the activity, and the installation of a biomass boiler system that will meet nearly 100% of the school’s heating needs. The elevated stage and gymnasium will also be made available to the community. The GNWT provided a larger than standard gym with a wood floor at 476 square meters and extra instructional space, as well as components outside of the original scope of work.

The Commission scolaire francophone (CSF) has been running a fundraising campaign with the goal of raising $150 thousand for additional benefits for the school and francophone community; the campaign has surpassed the $100 thousand mark.

Quotes

“The francophone community is a vibrant and growing part of the social, economic and cultural fabric of the North. This facility is outstanding. Our investments in the expansion of École Allain St-Cyr will improve instructional, cultural and recreational time for the school population. The expansion will provide a school that serves the needs of both students and the larger francophone community in Yellowknife.”

-Caroline Cochrane, Minister of Education, Culture and Employment

“This project represents a significant GNWT investment of capital funds in social infrastructure.  The expansion at École Allain St-Cyr demonstrates what can be done when we work together to benefit students and the francophone community. ”

-Wally Schumann, Minister of Infrastructure

“It has been a long and arduous road to get to this point, but I am extremely proud of the end result. It is a much welcomed expansion and the students, staff and parents will enjoy it for years to come. The Commission scolaire will continue to work on adding further specialty spaces to enhance programming at the high school level and work diligently on adding similar spaces to École Boréale in Hay River. On behalf of the school and the francophone community, I’d like to thank the GNWT and the Departments of Education, Culture and Employment and Infrastructure on the collaborative approach practiced during this phase of construction. When there is true collaboration, wonderful things can happen.”

-Simon Cloutier, Chair, Commission scolaire francophone
