WHITEHORSE, YUKON – Sept. 3, 2009 – The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), today announced funding for a new project to diversify the Yukon economy by funding local filmmakers to make commercials that will promote the territory as an ideal location for future productions. This initiative was made possible through Canada’s Economic Action Plan.”This project builds on existing strengths in the Yukon and encourages investment in the territory’s economy and jobs,” said the Honourable Chuck Strahl, who is also Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Metis and Non-Status Indians. “This will continue to broaden and diversify the Yukon’s economy and improve its market access for its business products.”

The Yukon Film and Sound Commission will receive $635,000 over two years towards its Film Commercial Development Project. This money will be used to hire a crew and marketing firm to design, develop and distribute a series of 13 one-minute commercials that advertise Yukon as an ideal location for filming.

This funding comes under the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF). As part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the CAF is a two-year $1 billion national program that provides economic stimulus by supporting projects that create jobs in communities affected by the global recession. The fund will provide $32.8 million to Northern Canada.

The CAF is one of a suite of economic development programs that fall under the mandate of CanNor in the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering federal economic development activities in the territories, and for policy, research and advocacy. Promoting social and economic development in the North is one of the four pillars of the Government of Canada’s integrated Northern Strategy.

Today Minister Strahl also announced funding for additional economic development projects in the North for Nunavut and Northwest Territories.
