Edmonton police dig deep in cold case files in advance of MMIW visit – CP

Edmonton police are reviewing hundreds of unsolved homicide and missing-persons files _ some dating back decades _ in advance of a visit to the city this fall by the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls commission.

The Edmonton Police Commission was told Thursday that so far, 11 files involving a dozen victims have undergone a complete review in the last few months.

As well, another 10 missing person investigations have been re-examined.

Edmonton police Staff Sgt. Bill Clark says the review has already produced results with the arrest of a suspect in the death of Janet Cardinal, who was allegedly killed in an apartment on the city’s east side in 2011.

Clark also says investigators intend to do a better job of keeping relatives of missing or murdered people informed of how work is or is not progressing on the files.

Information on Indigenous females will be passed along to the commission, which will be in Edmonton in November.

“Our job now is to review these files. If there’s DNA send it to the lab. If there’s interviews that we need to do and re-do, we’re going to do them, and various other police techniques we’ll use on these files,” Clark told reporters after the police commission meeting.

“We’ll be seeing some solves. It’s just going to take time.” (CHED)
