End The Crisis: First Nations Take to the Streets
2007-06-29
Charlie Angus joined in today’s National Day of Action for First Nations. The walk through Timmins was organized by the Wabun Tribul Council and Mushkegowuk Council.
The Assembly of First Nations called on all Canadians to stand together with Aboriginals to insist the Federal Government respond to the crisis in First Nation communities.Bisson says First nations are being denied basic rights. “We see it in every community. Poverty, lack of housing, unsafe water, no schools and suicide. The Provincial Government has to begin to live up to its obligations. And revenue sharing is one way to help grow these communities to become self-sufficient.”
MP Charlie Angus says governments are moving way too slow. “How is that DeBeers can move in and build a huge mining complex in a short period of time. And yet government can’t resolve issues in 100 years in the small community. Something’s not right here.”
Attawapiskat Chief Mike Carpenter says they worked closely with DeBeers.
“It is the Provincial Government that made a mess with this project. They slapped an 8-percent increase on the diamond royalty. That means less money for the company and less money for my community.”
The walk through Timmins was guided with the help of Timmins Police, OPP and NAPS.
