Environmental Groups Applaud Court Ruling On Trans Mountain – 89.5 The Lake FM

A court decision to suspend the Trans Mountain Pipeline is a victory for Indigenous rights and the rule of law.

That’s the feeling of Tim Gray from the group Environmental Defence.

He says the ruling this week shows the National Energy Board has to do it’s due diligence when evaluating pipeline projects.

“Courts clearly have said these projects don’t happen in isolation. They occur within a community…a landscape. The idea that you can build a pipe and not evaluate the fact it’s going to cause a massive increase to the number of ships that take the oil from the pipes seems a little ridiculous,” says Gray.

A federal court of appeals also ruled the Canadian Government did not take into account the concerns of Indigenous groups when supporting the project.
