Re: “First Nations blackmail shouldn’t shape policy,” Naomi Lakritz, Opinion, April 5.
Why should taxpayers continue to provide millions of dollars to support a society that seems to do little to support itself? First Nations are eager to negotiate a better deal, but it is always a one-sided negotiation. On one side is the demand for settlement of land claims, more money for reserves, health care and education. Where do the demands stop?
What is aboriginal society willing to commit? Can they commit to making education a priority, ensuring an equitable system of distribution of federal funding is followed, and provide that a secure environment exists for members on reserves? Can they ensure financial accountability is in place? Can they call themselves environmentalists by showing some pride in their communities’ appearance? A completed pipeline path is a lot less of an eyesore than many reserve community sites adjacent to the highway.
