Equitas in June: 130 Human Rights Stories Worth Telling
Homogeneous college town turns international as 130 delegates from Armenia to Zimbabwe attend Equitas’ three-week training program at John Abbott College in Ste. Anne de Bellevue
MONTREAL, June 8 – Genocide, torture, arbitrary arrests and detention, violence against women and discrimination against minorities are just some of the abuses still common around the world. Yet education can stop human rights violations, which is why Montreal-based Equitas-International Centre for Human Rights Education has invited 130 international delegates to receive training on how to promote equality and human rights in their native countries. From June 11 to June 30, the bucolic campus and student residences of John Abbott College will become home to delegates from 60 nations, including Canada, as they follow the 28th annual International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP). Thanks to the support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), some 3,000 people have received IHRTP training since 1980. Training eschews traditional lecture-style format and provides participatory training. Workshops are designed to provide tools needed to counter entrenched opinions or foster acceptance between clashing groups and communities.
