Fact Finding Report On Climate Change Released

by NationTalk on September 25, 2009372 Views

YELLOWKNIFE – September 24 – Members of the Joint Committee on Climate Change have released the findings of a fact finding trip taken April 25 to May 7 (2009) to Denmark, southern Sweden and southern Finland.Download here: http://www.assembly.gov.nt.ca/_live/pages/wpPages/home.aspx

Information learned from the trip will help to inform the development of policies and technologies in the Northwest Territories in the GNWT’s efforts to advance reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and lower the cost of living for NWT communities.

Committee Chair Michael Miltenberger says biomass, in particular, is a significant source of renewable energy in these countries and the experience and advanced technologies in use there were of interest to Members.

The report indicates visits to biomass systems demonstrated that reliable and economically technology is available, and could be considered to meet the NWT’s local energy needs. The use of biomass could also provide local employment and investment opportunities.

The Government of the Northwest Territories has identified the need to develop and implement renewable energy sources such as biomass, wind, geothermal and solar to meet its commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It is also taking actions under its Reducing the Cost of Living Strategic Initiative to address and alleviate pressures on heating and power costs for NWT residents.

The Joint Committee on Climate Change is comprised of: Hon. Michael Miltenberger, Minister Environment and Natural Resources; Hon Michael McLeod, Minister Responsible for Infrastructure, MLA Weledeh Bob Bromley and MLA Mackenzie Delta Dave Krutko.
