September 19, 2017 – Kenora, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario – FedNor
Eabametoong First Nation families will benefit from improved access to health, wellness and cultural programming thanks to an investment of more than $78,000 from the Government of Canada.
The funding was announced today by the Honourable Bob Nault, Member of Parliament for Kenora, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedNor.
The funding will support renovations and upgrades at the Eabametoong First Nation Community Healing and Wellness Centre. This investment will help ensure accessibility to a variety of community programs and services that promote physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellness, as well as the sharing of traditional knowledge.
This investment is being allocated under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, a $300-million funding that was established to celebrate Canada’s 150 birthday through investments in the community spaces that bring Canadians together. Of that amount, $10.4 million is being invested across Northern Ontario.
Quotes
“This investment is a community-building project to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. And there’s no better way to mark this milestone than to celebrate the places that bring us together – the places that allow us to stay fit, unwind, and connect with our friends and neighbours. That’s how we establish the bonds of common understanding and friendship in a country where people come from every corner of the world. The values of openness, diversity and inclusion that define all Canadians are forged in our community spaces.”
– The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor
“Our government’s investments are helping to improve essential infrastructure assets for Northern Ontario’s Indigenous communities which, in turn, help to improve the overall quality of life. By providing First Nation communities, such as Eabametoong, with the tools they need to develop and grow, we are contributing to the long-term social, cultural and economic development of the entire region.”
– The Honourable Bob Nault, Member of Parliament for Kenora
“On behalf of the Eabametoong First Nation, I would like to thank FedNor for this investment. Renovating this building will ensure our citizens have access to a variety of community programs and services that promote well-being, Elder-Youth relationship building, the sharing of Christian/traditional knowledge, and a variety of community celebrations. The facility will have a strong spiritual significance for our citizens, and will serve an important role as a community gathering and healing place for many years to come.”
– Elizabeth Atlookan, Chief, Eabametoong First Nation
