INDIGENOUS artists from across North America will converge on Winnipeg this fall for the fifth annual Aboriginal Music Week festival.

The event, which runs Aug. 16-21, will showcase 25 artists in 10 different venues throughout the city, including a couple of new free outdoor concerts in the inner city.

“We’re working with some great community partners and taking the music to some of the neighbourhoods in Winnipeg that don’t usually get to participate in festivals,” festival chairman Alan Greyeyes said in a release. Those partners include Picnic in the Park, Spence Neighbourhood Association, Ndinawemaaganag Endaawaad, University of Winnipeg and Winnipeg Folk Festival.

Organizers hope the additions will boost overall attendance at this year’s event by 2,000 people, Greyeyes said. Attendance nearly doubled from 2011 to 2012, with nearly 5,700 people taking in the shows.
