First Nation opposes casino – The Province

A controversial proposal for a $100-million casino in Surrey could be challenged because the site is on unceded aboriginal lands that may hold sacred burial grounds and artifacts, according to the Semiahmoo First Nation.

Members of the Semiahmoo First Nation are the latest citizen group to rise up against the planned South Surrey casino, a glittering amalgamation of gaming, dining and entertainment facilities that would pump multi-millions into city coffers and the local economy, but could have severe social impacts according to critics.

The casino, proposed by Gateway Casinos and Entertainment and the B.C. Lottery Corporation, would be at 168th Street and 10th Avenue, just “a stone’s throw” from Semiahmoo reserve land, band Coun. Joanne Charles said.
