The Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre was proud to host the First Nations Language Teachers Symposium-Phase II, February 20 – 22, 2008 at the Clarion Hotel, Winnipeg. Phase I of the Symposium was held November 21-23, 2007 and the objective was to: “Work and Develop a First Nations Language Curriculum and Teachers Guide for K-Grade 12.” The rationale for this process was: “To share teaching methods and language learning practices and to provide our First Nations Language teachers with teaching strategies.”Over 100 delegates from across Manitoba attended the February event. The guest facilitators were Linda Pelly-Landrie and Marcella Fontaine who both gave an Overview of First Nations Models. Throughout the three days, the delegates broke into working groups and worked closely with the facilitators and Elders to brainstorm and strategize for Community Based Language Planning Sessions.
The MFNERC would like to extend their gratitude to the educators, leadership and Elders who attended this event, as well as the key organizer, Ruth Norton, First Nations Language Specialist for the MFNERC.
