West Vancouver BC. – Five candidates have stepped forward to run for the position of Regional Chief for the BC Assembly of First Nations. The elections for BC Regional Chief will be held October 1, 2009 during the Annual General Meeting of the BCAFN at the Chief Joe Mathias Recreation Centre in North Vancouver, BC. The Regional Chief’s seat has been vacant since Shawn A-in-chut Atleo successfully ran for the position of National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations this past July. Further, four other First Nations Chiefs were acclaimed to the four vacant Board of Directors seats.Ardith Walkem, the Chief Electoral Officer responsible for the October 1, 2009 election for the office of the BC Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief and vacant Board of Directors positions has received and approved nomination papers from the following persons:
For Regional Chief:
• Shane Gottfriedson (Tke’mlups/Kamloops Indian Band)
• Stewart Phillip (Penticton Indian Band)
• Lynda Price (Ulkatcho First Nations)
• Robert Shintah (Ts’kw’aylaxw Indian /Band)
• Jody Wilson Raybould (We Wai Kai First Nation)
The following have been acclaimed to the Board of Directors:
• Maureen Chapman (Skawahlook First Nation)
• Lydia Hwitsum (Cowichan Tribes)
• Nelson Leon (Adams Lake Indian Band)
• Tony Morgan (Gitanyow Band)
What: BCAFN Regional Chief Election
When: October 1, 2009
Where: Chief Joe Mathias Recreation Centre

When: First Ballot 9:00am -10:30am; Second Ballot 11:00am -12:30pm; Third Ballot (if necessary) 1:00pm – 2:30pm
The BCAFN Bylaw and Constitution states the winning candidate in the election for Regional Chief must have at least 50% plus one of the votes validly cast in the election. If none of the candidates attains 50% plus one of the votes validly cast on the first ballot, further ballots shall be held until one of the candidates attains the necessary number of votes. On each successive ballot, the name of the candidate with the fewest votes shall be removed.

The BCAFN is a Political Territorial Organization (PTO) whose members are the 203 First Nations in British Columbia. The BCAFN is inclusive in its representation including First Nations involved in the treaty process and those that have chosen not to engage. In addition, the modern and historic treaty First Nations of BC are also members, which include the Nisga’a Nation, and the Douglas and Treaty 8 First Nations. An elected Regional Chief provides the political leadership and activities for the BCAFN, and this role is a three-year term, elected by the Chiefs of the First Nations of BC.
