Flood Crisis Exposes Need For Long-term Plan for Kash
Charlie Angus wants to know how many more floods have to occur before the Federal Government takes serious action to address the need to get families off the flood plain of the James Bay coast. Kashechewan and Fort Albany are being evacuated, while neighbouring Attawapiskat has moved to a stage 1 evacuation order.During today’s Question Period, Angus says evacuations won’t just stop. “Where has this government been? These communities have been flooded year after year yet the Conservatives don’t act on suggestions to move the community to higher ground.”
Angus hopes the flood waters subside soon so residents can return home. “The provincial authorities have risen to the occasion. The community leaders have been amazing as have our regional centers for evacuation. But it begs the question — where is the federal government? Why is this work necessary, year after year, because the Conservatives have walked away on their commitment to move this community to safe ground?”
Timmins-James Bay MPP Gilles Bisson also used Question Period at Queen’s Park to ask the Ontario Government to sit down and look for a solution with the communities.
“There have been millions spent on evacuating residents when we could be using that money for a solution. I want the Province to establish a committee that could hear from experts on ways to minimize these situations. I also want the people of the James Bay to be at the table and heard.”
