The forest fire risk is low in the southern portions of Northwestern Ontario, in the Kenora and Fort Frances districts, but it’s moderate and high in other areas farther north.
Three new forest fires started May 21: Red Lake Fire Number Four in Pikangikum First Nation was declared out after burning 0.2 hectares; Red Lake Fire Number Five, also in Pikangikum First Nation, was declared out after burning 0.1 hectares; the newest fire, Kenora Fire 25, is still active.
Kenora Fire 25, which is near Big Sand Lake about 40 kilometres north of Kenora, started Tuesday evening. It’s burned 19 hectares.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Aviation Forest Fire Emergency Services suggest the following to help prevent forest fires: Choose the site of campfires carefully and keep fires small.
