SASKATOON – A former leader of the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan has died after a battle with cancer. 

Jim Sinclair, 79, passed away on Friday. 

Sinclair became president of the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan in 1971 and held the post for 18 years. 

In 1971, he helped establish the Native Council of Canada, now known as the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples. 

Sinclair was instrumental in successfully lobbying to have Metis included in the Constitution Act and was a tireless advocate for Metis and Aboriginal issues.
